Forests of Latvia looks at the role of the forest in the daily lives of the Latvian people and considers the challenge of finding a balance between the crucial recreational, economic, and environmental roles of the forest.

Alan Gignoux took this photograph from Forests of Latvia in the Gauja National Park, a nature reserve that covers an area about 920km2, protecting the most beautiful stretch of the Gauja River between Valmira and Murjani.  The park was established in 1973 to conserve the environment, promote nature tourism, and ensure sustainable development.

This image was exhibited at the Fishing Quarter Gallery, Brighton as part of Alan Gignoux’s solo exhibition Bruised Lands in 2019.

It is featured in the project newspaper, Forests of Latvia published in 2017.  The first edition of 100 has sold out but a second edition of 50 will be available in the Gignouxphotos book shop from December 2023.
