A collaboration between Alan Gignoux and Chloe Juno, Monuments documents the communities in North-Rhine Westphalia earmarked for demolition to make way for surface coal mining.
This image shows a section of the Garzweiler II mine. Garzweiler I and Garzweiler II are surface mines used for extracting lignite or brown coal, the dirtiest form of coal. Together they have claimed 114km2 of land in North-Rhine Westphalia, an area around the size of San Francisco, causing the destruction of homes and communities and the displacement of around 40,000 people.
This image is included in the project photobook Monuments, published in 2022 and available to buy from the Gignouxphotos book shop. The photobook is also available from The Photographers’ Gallery (London), Huis Marseille (Amsterdam), Open Eye Gallery (Liverpool), and NOUA (Norway) and is included in the Protest in Photobook collection. It was exhibited as part of Gignoux’s solo exhibition Bruised Lands during COP 26 at the Briggait, Glasgow (2021).
