Textile Factory, Ural Mash, Russia, 2009

From: £250.00

Russian Rust Belt looks at economic decline and environmental degradation in the Urals industrial region, once the driving force behind the Soviet economy.

Alan Gignoux travelled around the Ural region exploring mining and industrial centres.  He spent some time in Ural Mash, a district of Yekaterinburg that in Soviet times was a major industrial hub employing tens of thousands, but which in recent years has been hit hard by industrial decline. There he visited a textile and clothing factory staffed entirely by women, documenting the workers at every stage of the manufacturing process.

Russian Rust Belt was developed during a residency with the NCCA (National Centre for Contemporary Art) in 2009.

This photograph is included in the project photobook Russian Rust Belt, published in 2023 and available to buy in the Gignouxphotos book shop and at The Photographers’ Gallery (London), and Pushkin House (London).

Available in two sizes, printed on fine art quality Canson Arches 88 paper:

A0 – Edition of 5

A3 – Edition of 10
